I just found the neatest site and wanted to share. The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) has a Consumer Assistance site that is just cool. I’m not a fan of telemarketers or junk mail and this site tells you how to get rid of both of these nuisances. The site also tells you about the safest ways to surf the net. And for those parents out there, they have a program called “Get CyberSavvy!” that helps all of us better understand and enjoy cyberspace.
Okay, so I’m a little into frugality and consumer
rights.
So I love Clark Howard – he covers
both areas. But I especially like his Consumer Action
Center http://clarkhoward.com/cac/
Then there’s the government. The Consumer &
Governmental Affairs Bureau is an FCC-sponsored site that addresses
consumer issues http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/
Of course you can’t talk about consumer’s rights without
mentioning Consumer Reports, which is available at the library or on-line from
EBSCOhost (through GALILEO) with the use of your library card.
For frugality the Tightwad Gazette by Amy
Dacyzyn is the definitive work that anybody can use in their day to
day life and without a degree in finance. We have several copies in
our library system.
We also have a few other titles that cover either consumer
education or frugal living:
Scam-proof Your Life by Sid Kirchheimer
Frugal Living for Dummies by Deborah Taylor-Hough
Baby Bargains by Denise Fields
Cheap, fast, good!: a cookbook by Beverly Mills
Frozen Assets by Deborah Taylor-Hough
These are just a few titles under the subject search of
“consumer education.” And of course the library is not just a
source of free information – it’s a place that lets you borrow stuff for
free. Just remember to return it on time!
