Schools all across Georgia are preparing for the 2009 Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl. The competition for DeKalb schools is on January 31 and the State finals will be in Athens on March 7. That’s still several months away so why am I writing this post now? Because to compete, teams need to be assembling now and assigning reading responsibilities. The books for the Reading Bowl are the current Georgia Children’s Book Award nominees (there is a list for elementary schools and a list for middle schools) and the Georgia Peach Award for Teen Readers nominees (for high schools.)
This year’s competition is especially important because it marks the 10th anniversary that DeKalb County has participated in the Reading Bowl. Last year, Kittredge Magnet School placed 1st in the elementary school competition and Columbia High School placed 2nd in the high school competition!
Check out their website for all the rules, book lists and other information and check with your child’s school about joining a team. It’s fun and rewarding and it’s a competition centered around reading. What could be better than that?
