Glad to see you mention the oldest Mardi Gras in America! New Orleans is great, but anyone looking for a more family-oriented Fat Tuesday should head down to Mobile, where they've been celebrating since 1703 (ok, not continuously). Best parade is the Mystics of Time, with 3 fire- and smoke-breathing dragons that head straight for the little kids and send them screaming.

Throw me a moon pie, mister!

Not entirely related, but I read two fiction books recently set in New Orleans. They both happened to be really excellent books. A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole, which made me laugh so hard I had to read it in private! And more recently The Moviegoer by Walker Percy which was really moving and begs to be re-read.
